Perhaps the most spectacular home in Grayling, Michigan, the Victorian Hanson House was constructed in 1891 by Rasmus Hanson as a gift to his wife, Margaret. Hanson was a Danish immigrant whose business interests included timber, sawmills, the Michigan Sugar Company and the Bay City Sugar Company.
According to one report, Hanson's company harvested more white pine than any other firm in the country. He also was responsible for donating 15,000 acres to create Camp Grayling for the Michigan National Guard. |

The Hanson House retains its Victorian heritage with ornately carved woodwork and staircase, leaded and stained glass beveled windows, three carved fireplaces with Roman tile, and decorative 1882 hand painted murals, depicting scenes of the Danish countryside.
Current owners Dave and Jill Wyman operate The Hanson House as a bed and breakfast, and are committed to preserving the home's original splendor. |
